At MAPLE, in the spring of 2021, I, Virabhadra, had served as chant leader for a couple of months, and it was my last night of training in this role. After the Om Mani Padme Hum chant had ended, as a last piece of feedback, the head teacher, Soryu, said to me “Keep going”.
He asked me what I took this to mean and I said “to continue to practice and deepen my ability to chant lead”. He acknowledged this was a small part of what he meant, but it was a very self-focused / self-limited way to look at it.
His feedback for me referred more to the group’s chanting, the next chant leader’s work, and so on over time, that it was now my job to keep the momentum of deepening our chanting practice going and going.
