Immortality pill 2
I was with Soryu in San Fransisco at a public meditation event, and a participant asked him, “Many people are now claiming that medicine will be able to reverse aging, so that we will never die. If there were a pill that could achieve this, would you take it?”
He said, “If we ask if we would take it, we should first ask if we should take it. Is the world better off with me in it?
“I myself know that it’s not better off with me in it. In meditation, I have entered worlds where I am not, and they are better worlds. In fact, the world would be better off without everyone in it.
“As you know, there is a point in life when we’ve done our job or we haven’t, but either way, it’s time to stop holding the world back by binding it to your existence. It’s good that people die eventually, because by holding onto life, they can’t help but prevent others from moving on. In fact, most simple life forms are amortal. Mortality was a major evolutionary step, and it’s ironic that techies wish to devolve in this way.
“With this backdrop, consider how bad it is for the world when selfish, immoral beings are in it. That’s especially harmful. Such beings should not try to live for a long time. But they do not ask the question of whether the world is better off with them in it, so they are the ones who do live long. That’s the nature of samsara.”
