MAPLE Tales

Nirvikalpa Samadhi

Towards the end of a meeting about recent events he had been speaking at in California, Forall mentioned the understanding of practice that he was encountering on the west coast.

He asked if anyone here — at MAPLE — knew the term Nirvikalpa Samadhi. Nobody did. He said it might be translated as “totally non-conceptual, non-discriminative samadhi”. He said that many Buddhist teachers would say that it is only accessible to those of deep realization, those close to complete awakening. Teachers in Hindu traditions might refer to it as the penultimate realization.

“However, it’s reported as a very common experience in California.”

We all had a good laugh.
