The residents and Soryu gathered in the main hall to discuss a recent event in the community. A resident had recently come out of a long solo retreat in which he had not maintained his integrity and then immediately left campus with his girlfriend. Many in the community were hurt and confused, including me. I had been affected very deeply by the actions of my friend and brother on the path, but I stayed silent during the group conversation. As the discussion was breaking up and we were transitioning into the next part of the evening schedule, Soryu said to me, “ Why didn’t YOU say anything?” I said, “My heart hurts”. He said, “You just like it when your heart hurts. Don’t let his betrayal make you betray us.”
